HX DOSXtender - and Win 16 graphical apps, possible ? (DOSX)

Hi ! I'm a very new adept, and this is my first message to the forum.

Yesterday installed HXDOS & HXGUI components and started to play with it in raw DOS (Win 98 SE's DOS 7.1) . Before I pull my hair out completely though, just a question : under HX, I can't seem to execute but the legacy DOS-16 stub off Win 16 graphical appz (New Executable) like, e.g., Winver.exe or GNU-Chess.

So, my guess is there is no support for Win 16 GUI executables, is this right ?

Any known way to run those in DOS either with HX or some other system ?

Thanks go to the developper and all contributors,

Please move the signature to your user profile. Choose "Profile" in the upper right corner, then click "Edit user data" and fill in, e.g., "Ninho" (no "-- ") to the "Signature:" text field.

"no support" is a bit harsh, I'd prefer "virtually no support". Because, at least, there is the DOSX.EXE somewhere buried in HXRT, which allows to run Win3.1 on machines where the original DOSX.EXE fails.

There's some support for the NE file format, which is the format used by Win16 binaries, but that's just because it's the ONLY somewhat popular 16-bit format for protected-mode.

IIRC there was a (free?) WinOS/2 which did run in DosEmu...

Seen it, and plan to play with it sometime later. Reminds me, long long ago, of times when I would experiment with DPMI and protected mode programming by renaming my own programs "krnl286.exe" and launching them courtesy of the DOSX of Windows 3.1. All of that in Turbo Degugger IIRC :=)

Ah, yes I've heard it by I never owned an OS2. Is it now perhaps "abandonware" (at least, old versions) ?

In any case you're doing truly remarkable work; may I ask where/how you've learnt the intricacies of proprietary MS crap\\\\software ?

Regards...

Not free - it was IBM's reduced version of OS/2, without Win3.x components.
