Well, just an erruption on the Sun? What is the average per this or last year? :-D

May it live onward for a thousand years! As long as I'm still around, I'm going to continue to use and appreciate DOS. Thanks rr for your efforts at keeping a great forum running.

Yep, me too. 90 % or more of my computing is in DOS, the rest in Linux.

"185 registered users, 11 users online (1 registered, 10 guests)"

That says something !
The number of guests outnumbers the registered user (me) by 10 to 1.

Add one more -- about 90% of my personal computing time is in DOS... by choice! For stuff that's not possible or not as efficient in DOS, i use a "pimped up" Windows 98SE + KernelEx or (maybe 0.1% of the time <cough, cough>) XP.

As long as i ain't dead, neither is DOS!

P.S. We do have "modern" Windows at work....

All my personal work is via WIN7 using Photoshop and Lightroom... for photography...my Hobby.

I get PAID to develop for DOS! And love it. Embedded systems, custom hardware, all that matters is execution speed.

Where do you work? Maybe I need to change jobs. I'd love to get into embedded systems.

Yes, it's interesting if there are still some new developed systems under DOS. I thought that there's mostly only maintaining of old systems (that are replaced by new ones). It would be nice to have a chance of utilize this knowledges at work, for me it's just a hobby.

I haven't done anything remotely "embedded" since I maintained a Linux satellite radio simulator driver and developed protocol analyzers (dissectors) in ethereal (now wireshark) along with some initial integration testing of the radio system that would go into the mars science lander for NASA more than 10 years ago. We were playing with enabling standard tcp/ip software in space.

I've been working with PC-104 stacks (and there successors) and the "ICOP" Vortex 86DX board. The latter ships with FreeDOS on it. I use them in a Lab as realtime controllers, single-process with all inline drivers and interrupt handlers is a perfect for the job.

I hit the "barrier at the end of the universe" where PLINK86 could not handle more symbols in the overlay linker. "Bit the big one" and converted all of my code from real mode to Phar Lap extended mode. I've used both continuously since the 1980s.

Sorry, but these numbers say nothing, because the 'guests' number also includes search engine crawlers, e. g., Google bot, MSN bot, Slurp, Yahoo.

That reminds me to check this site's traffic for the last month... Locking out Yandex bots now.

New users added in:
* 2006: 2 (just 'mht' and I)
* 2007: 25
* 2008: 25
* 2009: 27
* 2010: 31
* 2011: 30
* 2012: 20
* 2013: 25 (so far)

So the average is around 2-3 users per month.

Note to self: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `forum_userdata` WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(`registered`) BETWEEN UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2013-01-01 00:00:00') AND UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2013-12-31 23:59:59')

OK, thanks for the statistics. But it's also more important users activity than just a presence. I cas see there are about 10 working on some SW... So it's not dead yet :)

I would be more optimistic: if you read the interview with Jim Hall:
http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/452826/developer_interview_dos_long_dead_long_live_freedos/
you will know "There were more than 379,000 downloads of FreeDOS since the release of 1.1 in January last year, and there were more than 39,000 downloads of FreeDOS 1.1 in January this year alone.
These numbers are solely for downloads from the project's site, so the real number of people who have had contact with the system is likely higher."

Not bad, right?
regards, andrea :-)
