F-PROT is dead (Announce)

This is very unfortunate, but the DOS version has been removed from the official website. I don't understand why... It is common sense that the DOS version would be the most useful even for cleaning Windows! Fortunately, definition files may still be downloaded freely.

Sorry, but you're wrong: Download F-PROT Antivirus for DOS - Personal Use
I already point to this page from http://www.bttr-software.de/links/#av for several weeks.

P.S. Please don't use additional line breaks in your posts.

BTW, your link to Blair's p7zip is outdated (4.42). I understand that Michael Kostolev (sp?) has had site issues, so try linking to here instead for the latest 4.55 p7zip/DJGPP binary: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/util/file/7zip/

It is good to hear that I'm wrong. =) Thanks for the link. I didn't notice it on your website. By the way, when I started from http://www.f-prot.com/, I couldn't reach that download location. The following was all I found: "We no longer offer F-PROT Antivirus for DOS. Please refer to F-PROT Antivirus for Windows or our products for other platforms for your needs." This might mean that the DOS version will soon be removed. If you visit http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_user/, the link to the DOS version does not exist!

Will think about it. Thanks!

I know. That's why I changed the link some weeks ago.

Maybe you want to revive Eric Auer's Clam AntiVirus port.

P.S. again: Please use additional line breaks only for new paragraphs. This forum wraps long lines automatically.

F-PROT / ClamAV for DOS / RHBVS

Eric didn't do the port, Joergen Ibsen did. And I recently contacted him via e-mail, but he's too busy to (probably) do it again these days:

I pointed him to my FreeDOS mini distro, hoping that would help get him up and running. But he needs time, so I didn't press him too hard. (Besides, we still have F-Prot, as mentioned above, and others like RHBVS).

FYI, here's what Eric has on his site:

Exactly ^^^ this "reason" :-(

Fortunately even more, DOS is the only unvirable OS in the universe

You mean no one's writing viruses for it any more :)

DOS used to be pretty notorious for viruses back in the day.

The only OSes that are "unvirable" are systems employing decent security mechanisms (a la linux/bsd/etc)

This was 25 years ago because people refused to believe that computer viruses exist at all :lol3:

Which people? Software attacks were already old, 25 years ago. It was no big trouble for attackers to extend their range to DOS, and no big news to knowing administrators and users that defense would be nice.
