BSD alternatives to coreutils (Developers)

In recent years (say after 2005), more and more GNUisms have been implemented in the BSD tools.

My guess would be that in the (early-mid) nineties, people prefered the BSD tools for dos porting because they had simpler buildsystem (just make) than GNU with all its autoconf/configure stuff.

Both require decent pipe implementations.

_on_ or _for_ ? Many issues can be avoided by crosscompiling I assume.

P.s. afaik the last non msys (pure mingw) coreutils is also already quite old, 2005 or so.
