So, you're best bet, IMO, would be to look at some of the things that Juan Manual Guerrero and Andris Pavenis do for the djgpp/GNU ports they build. Juan Manual Guerrero usually creates a djgpp folder in the port and uses a simpler build system. Find him on the djgpp list.
