Why would you need the access to binaries?

You need source code to update the code. To access anything using SSL or TLS you have to use pretty recent versions of an SSL library as the encryption methods are retired every several years.

Sometimes, updating a recent-ish code is just a recompile. And sometimes a one line source fix.

It's not about forcing anyone to do anything but about having the source to update or modify software. Which is not the case when someone only publishes the binaries, like Georg did. The first is required by GPL, the second is allowed by BSD and MIT licenses.

My point was that if the original code was under GPL, anyone could update it and release a new version that supports modern SSL/TLS server allowing this new LINKS build to access modern HTTPS web. This could be done with only a recompile with newer version of OpenSSL from DJGPP.

As Georg's changes are mostly available only as binary, you can't change the source - you have to use an ancient port by the original author, manually porting the code to the updated components.
