AFAIK, only 2.93 and later had LZMA support. So, if you know what UPX version, anything less than that won't have it. BTW, LZMA does indeed improve compression a good amount for DJGPP's .EXEs.

Anyways, just FYI, I wrote a wimpy semi-useless tool that tells you if a DJGPP .EXE is UPX'd and what version did it. It's not that good, though, since it just looks at the exact same offset in the file (but it seems to consistently work!). It also returns an errorlevel. Don't expect anything fancy, you might even laugh how simple it is! ;-)
