GCC 4.8.4 is just a minor bugfix of 4.8.x line no bloat increase compared to GCC 4.9.x that I observed a little bit. Probably older version of GCC 4.x.x can be used as well but for FFMPEG you need updated djdev from cvs and some other fix like increased transfer buffer for ar.exe, rm.exe, ld.exe... to accept ultra long command line and maybe some other tricks, I described something in readme.txt in source package...
