Goodbye to "DOS ain't dead"! (Announce)

Dear all,

This is to let you know that I have come to the decision to close this forum.
Over the last years this forum was a great success, but also a big challenge sometimes. Now it's time to move on to other things. I'm sure you'll all respect my decision.
I genuinely want to thank each and everyone of you who have helped this forum over the years.
The forum will officially close on 2011-09-19. All contents will disappear then.
If anyone wishes to continue this forum somewhere else, please contact me.

Goodbye to "DOS ain't dead"!

What's the problem? You will not have time to maintain forum? or it's end of your paid domain/hosting? If it's not a technical issue why not to leave it running as is? If yes I hope that someone else who have possibility will host forum on his site. For all cases, before you'll shutdown, can you please upload somewhere zipped content of this forum? maybe plain text. Some years ago I did it via some script calling wget to dump this forum but I belive you can better handle it and produce some exported file(s). Anyway thanks for your work till now, good luck!

I, for one, would be sorry to see this forum disappear.

Sadly, I don't have the experience and expertise to take it on myself.

Goodbye to "DOS ain't dead"!

In worst case I may try to setup this forum on a freehosting (if php and mysql is enough) where 2GB of sapce is available, there are some limitations like traffic/month, probably slower acces outside CZ, bottom side ads and maybe some drop outs but maybe betther then a piece of wire in an eye :)
But I think e.g. Laaca may have better hosting

Well that blows. :-(

A few minor issues, I guess, but overall a great success. It's amazing we've discussed so much and shared so much information, links, etc. I'm proud of it, and I assume you'll agree.

> Now it's time to move on to other things. I'm sure

Well, I'm not that surprised, esp. as you have a new baby and all. And yes, things change. Of course it's your decision, and we have no choice, but indeed I can't help but respect your (successful) efforts over the years.

I wish you well in whatever you do in the future. (I know that doesn't mean much coming from me, but ....)

> I genuinely want to thank each and everyone of you who have helped this

There are still newsgroups and some other random forums (e.g. FASM), so we'll live. Too bad, though, it was indeed a nice little forum.

Whew, not a lot of time!!! Sadly, I truly can't help migrate or host myself else I probably would. Yes, keeping the archive of information available would be nice for posterity, but I guess it's not totally critical.

Thanks again for your efforts over the years. Hope all goes well for you and yours. If anyone ever says "DOS is dead" (as they probably will), I'll fondly remember this forum and all its brilliant geeks. :-D

I offer space on my site. But someone else will have to take over the moderator/administrator job.

Do we need moderator here? Anarchy rulez :) I think that for about 10-20 permanent visitors it's not necessary... I don't know if this forum needs some special maintainance, it seems simple so it should run like well oiled engine... (until end of free space for DB :)

Could you please keep it as read-only for some time after 2011-09-19 and upload the forum database somewhere ?

PS: IIRC there had been multiple DEATH announces about this forum in the past, all false so far ;-)

New group set up!

I found the discussions on this board very interesting and and don't like to see this board go away. Therefore I set up a new group with google groups which can be used instead.

So if Robert really closes this board the discussion can continue here:
http://groups.google.com/group/dosad

There are no messages in this group yet.

I have no idea how much work it will be to maintain the group, I just set it up. I cannot move over the old threads but I think Robert could leave the board available without allowing new posts for a while.

Well, that wipes me out ! :(

Requires access with SSL that Arachne doesn't have, and even Elinks (DOS), which does do SSL, fails to create an account there - even though I have created a gmail account (in DOS).

Using Linux to talk about DOS makes no sense to me, and I will NOT have Windows on any machine I own.

So, if that is the only option: goodbye and thanks for all the information !

Regards to all,
Ron

Me too, for a very different reason: I almost succeeded in creating
an account using Lynx (2.8.5) and DOS, but they would send me a
confirmation number by SMS or voice message to my mobile phone. I do
not have a mobile phone, nor know anyone who has one with any of the
carriers Google supports here.
(rant) One thing I dislike in the new technologies: they are more
and more being offered in an "all-or-nothing" basis (/rant)

Really? I saw this when trying to create gmail account a few months ago but a week ago when I tried it didn't required activation SMS. I don't like this but prepare for more worse, this is just a part of big brother program minimizing annonymity and freedom of Internet. It goes on slowly but one day you'll wake with ID chip inside your body :).

I just set up a new account with Google. The SMS was optional to allow to recover lost passwords and was not required to register.

The requirement seems to vary, Google sometimes required SMS or phone activation of me for account creation.

For the record, I'm not used to using a mobile either.

I don't know what you understand by "require", but AFAIK phone or SMS was never a prerequisite for registering.

They are of supreme intelligence and act too veiledly to be perceived, so the chips may be already there. This recalls me bygone times here, when some people really believed that all the phone conversations were listened and registered.:-D

Not voice recording of all phones but many smartphones sends it's position assording to BTS location or integrated GPS. E.g. uncle Google use huge amount of 'anonymous' GPS data from smartphones for improving their maps and I don't know what else. Of course your GSM operator can locate you any time but I belive they don't abuse this for theirs commercial activities. They only have to cooperate with police. Google and Apple use phone tracking more extensively... I think it's not funny. Some decades ago probably most of people would refuse such tracking but now nobody cares. So it's the way how to slowly destroy all privacy and gain control...

Goodbye to "DOS ain't dead"!

First, a big thank you. I am a relatively recent participant here, but I have found it a great resource, especially for those of us who write code.

I'd like to see this continue, somewhere, somehow. Losing critical mass would be a bad thing. If there are options you can discuss for keeping this going (with somebody else taking responsibility, hosting it, etc.) please let us know.

Goodbye to "DOS ain't dead"!

Dear all,

You have probably noticed, that I have received a lot of public feedback (plus a few private mails) on my announcement to close this forum. Thanks for that! I didn't know, that this forum is such an important part of the DOS community.

Today I have also received a large donation via PayPal from an unknown US guy to keep the forum alive.
Well, folks, I'm not trying to get rich now, but:
"DOS ain't dead" will stay online after 2011-09-19!

A special thanks to these people for their interest in hosting this forum: Glenn McCorkle, RayeR, Japheth, Michael B. Brutman, Jim Hall, Markus Maussner, and Michal H. Tyc. -- Maybe next time ... ;-)

Although I unfortunately have hardly had any time to do much private software
development the past 2 years, I have visited this forum almost every day.
