Does this whining still make a sense? It was discussed (not only) here many times. New compilers are of course more complex as HW getting more complicated, language is extending, code analysis getting deeper (e.g. newer gcc can recognize some dangerous part in code and produce a warning while older version kept silent)... So if you want to keep on track and make ports of latest projects you need new compiler and libs and you also need an appropriate hardware. I think that an old PII/III/4 is still good for running latest DJGPP and you can now pull out such computer from a trashcan for free :) --- |

ASIC BASIC for DOS could create a Hello World com in 360 bytes (according to Wikipedia)[1]. I think one could get that down to about 32 bytes if you only used ASM. |
