DOSBox-X 0.83.3 for DOS released (Announce)

The latest version of DOSBox-X for DOS is now officially released. It is a cross-platform DOS emulator with official modifications to run in a real DOS system. Unlike all previous versions, this version is now self-contained, without the need of any external files such as a pre-installed version of HX DOS Extender. I added all the required files (especially files from HX DOS Extender) to the package with the approval of the DOSBox-X developer, so that this version no longer requires external programs in order to run in a real DOS system, and the executable is automatically patched by PESTUB so that it can run directly from DOS.

Instruction: Simply unzip the file and type DOSBOX-X to run in DOS.

Hi, very nice. Have you used the modified version of HX DOS Extender with modern sound card support? Or which one?

This package mostly uses the latest official HX DOS Extender 2.18 builds. I did use the modified version of HX DOS Extender by Ruslan for my own DOSBox build earlier, but it seems to be no longer updated, unfortunately. You can find my previous post in this forum for more information:

You can replace the HX DOS Extender 2.18 builds with the modified 2.17 builds in case you have AC97 sound card and the latter package does work for you.

DOSBox-X 0.83.4 for DOS is now released. Like version 0.83.3, this version is also self-contained, so you can simply unzip the file and type DOSBOX-X to run in DOS.

DOSBox-X does support LPT port passthrough - see the [parallel] section in the dosbox-x.reference.conf file for details. As for USB ports - I do not think this can be supported in the DOS version; you can print to USB printers using the Print dialog in the Windows version on the other hand.

I printed from DOSBox-X to a USB port under DOS a few months ago. It requires a USB printer driver of course, that's not the emulator's job (like Georg Potthast's DOSUSB) and that creates a device for the printer attached to the USB port then the LPT passthrough function of DOSBox-X is used to connect the virtual LPT port to the appropriate device of the host system. It works.

On the other hand, I could not figure it out yet how to use the printer emulation function. It seems like it works, but then no output file can be found.

In order for the printer emulation function (to PS etc) to work, make sure the required font file(s) exist. Also, for programs that do not eject a form feed, you may need to manually eject a form feed before the output files are generated, or you can set a non-zero timeout for this to be done automatically. See the following Wiki page for more details on setting up printing in DOSBox-X:

The next version will search for the system fonts in C:\WINDOWS\fonts in addition to the old location.
