Time to move on... (Announce)

This forum will be discontinued soon. :-(
But we will continue with some new forum software (phpBB3). :-D

Pros:
* common user interface
* board view only
* more features
* less bugs or security holes
* large user base to get me help ;-)
* I won't edit your postings anymore to remove unnecessary quotations. :-P

Cons:
* old contents will be "lost", because I eschew to write a conversion tool :-|
* all users have to register again
* board view only
* might break Arachne browser

Now it's time to define a forum structure. Are you satisfied with current categories or do you want more/less? Please visit, e.g., phpBB ? Community Home to see what's possible.

Would be possible to get current forum content in some easy readable text such as plain text for download? I think there's good DOS KB...

No, but old forum will remain online in read-only mode.

I tried to run WGET script to dump entire (~3000, 48MB) posts, renamed them to btrrxxxx.htm but i'm unable to sort them by threads, they are time sorted. I also converted it into one big text file (11MB) for easy search.

If you intend to publish it, please remove the troll crap first :lookaround:

I have tested now with "A190j1.exe": Layout looks ugly, but one can still read messages. So same as before with "my little forum" software. Didn't try posting this time.

Stop being a troll.

It's good because this forum is a bit of a pain and is riddled with security holes.

I'm also doubting that Arachne breaks viewing it, considering, AFAIK, phpbb is Valid HTML 4.01.

Maybe it will not be phpBB3. ;-) I would like to keep a threaded view like in Usenet, because everyone (except DOS386) knows how to use it. So feel free to recommend other free forum software.

Could you please tell us WHY there is a need to move to another forum software? Has the current software reached its limits with 3,000 posts? Is it unmaintainable?

Because it has a lot of security leaks and doesn't generate valid HTML all the time.

> Is it unmaintainable?

It's still maintainable, but this version is no longer developed by the author. So I'm on my own to fix things and I lack time (as you already know).

But if someone really wants to contribute secure PHP code to "my little forum" I might change my mind. For instance I need a feature to break up drifted threads.

Also integration of the Smarty template engine would make many things easier.

Or how do you like my little forum v2? But it's still beta and I don't know, if it's more secure. Maybe "sol" could review source code? :-)

I think the phpbb idea is a good one. As much as I'd love to spend my time going through bad code...

It's not a good idea to use web software where the author doesn't even understand the "security" concept. It leaves me to question what they do actually know.

rr, this is a DOS forum. It's full of luddites. Change the board and ask for forgiveness after :) - you'll probably just get "hey, this isn't so bad..." anyway.

OK, but how to educate DOS386 not to write all text in a single reply with all that "blah wrote:"?

Time to move on... fix bugs, don't drop MLF

rr wrote:

YES. :lol3:

But I did bother to test and there are promising results:

- Layout is not more broken than with this MLF or PHP-BB2
- You can login
- You can write and submit a post - but it doesn't get saved :no:
- To test with registering

I can login and post here, with PHP-BB2 and SF forum ;-)

Of course the very worst forum software are "In-vision-In-accessible" and "V-bullenti" : most over-"featured" and you can't even read them (some of them at least ???) with FFOX with JS off :-(

> For instance I need a feature to break up drifted threads

Indeed. Possibility to move single posts out from a thread is needed (FASM's PHP-BB2 can :-) ).

> how to educate DOS386 not to write all text in a single reply with all that "blah wrote:"?

IMHO it's desperately stupid to boost my post count this way and pointless to brew multiple answers after multiple people placed the very same or very opposite argument on the very same issue :clap:

Why? Forum software change has been cancelled.

Try in English again.

It's called phpBB.

Then you didn't understand thread view. As a Usenet regular I expect replies below my post, but not in replies to other people.

Arachne vs PHP-BB-3

> > But I did bother to test and there are promising results:

This is good :-) But still compatibility of Arachne with PHP-BB3 or phpBB-3 is an issue - there will be more of them in future, whether one likes it or not. And the result is that I can't post :no: in ******3 forums (tested one so far), while with ******2 from 4 tested forums I could post in all 4 of them.

Another disappointment for some people: Incompatibility of the new software with Arachne has been announced, and apparently made some happy, at the EDR-DOS forum.

Well, security is something.

I like thread view, but I like security more, so call that my vote FWIW.

Fixed one in board view: If a topic had more than 50 replies, then link to last reply didn't work, because it was at a subsequent page.
