BIEW 6.1.0 - not fixed

> nickols_k released BIEW 6.1.0 on 12 December 2009

The old Spawn-BUG crashing the disassembler output is still in :-(

Is the spawn bug due to popen()? (Does default DJGPP 2.04 beta have a broken implementation? I seem to vaguely recall Juan manually patching various ports with a newer version because of that. Oh well, I'm not really sure.)

Anyways, the project has been renamed to BEYE.

Another problem is that the latest DOS .EXE was only compiled for 686+ (-mmmx -msse), but I (finally) recompiled it for him / you, if you're interested.

Isn't this discussed in the linked thread ???

COOL: comp.os.msdog

COOL, I'll test :-) Did you "fix" the "pope'n-BUG" also ?

Binary EAR - NOT fixed :-(

NOT fixed :-(

Did you use the latest "fixed" DGJPP ???

Other way to try : pick patches from here : http://sf.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2474144&group_id=1475&atid=101475

I used stock 2.04 since I wasn't sure if there were still problems. However, I also can compile with DJGPP 2.03p2 if you want to test that. I don't think that has the popen() bug. (Use the .BAT I made if you have DJGPP yourself.)

b610-203.zip (2.03p2 .EXE and .BAT)

48 hours elasped since release and no feedback ???

Either nobody is interested in Binary VIEW/EYE/EAR ... or nobody has DOS anymore and it works in NTVDM :-(

The core story is short: it doesn't work , the "spawn/popen-BUG" is still in. The next step is obvious: prevent this popen from being executed, since no version of DGJPP can do it without crashing :-|

Sorry didn't realize you were requesting any!! I am interested in applications like BIEW and have been following this thread - as I am sure others have been. If you need some additional testing I am happy to do that at some point but right now my problem is time, but if I can test something quickly then I will.

Personally I use DOS in different flavors. Pure DOS is very good for "instant on" uses.

Thank you for your extensive testing that you do - it is appreciated!

BEYE + [NY]ASM doesn't work (popen bug??)

You mean Ctrl-F4? It doesn't work on Windows, seems it can't find the assembler (even when in same directory). I've honestly never used the "assemble" feature in BIEW ever (although I've used it several times in HIEW).

Even the Win32 version of BIEW has been known to be buggy, in my experience (even moreso than the DOS version, i.e. Win32 version crashes more often on Win32, hence I usually use the DJGPP one!), even for simple stuff.

The main usefulness of BIEW (to me) is disasm and hex edit. Of course, it does much more. ;-)
