Paint for MS Dos (Announce)

Just came across http://blogs.msdn.com/b/premp/archive/2010/05/12/paint-for-ms-dos.aspx

Contains 16-bit binary made using Borland C++ and (undocumented :-|) ANSI C source code. Not a DPaint, but might be handy.

I thought Grafx2 was the Deluxe Paint clone? And don't forget VGAPaint/386! ;-)

BTW, I came across another suite for DOS (w/ TP7 units, no srcs yet, Romanian docs, but quite good font selection):

http://www.opincaru.ro/index_files/projects.htm

Graph256
= The pascal graphic library (pascal source code) - Supports all functions available in the standard Borland Pascal graphic library (graph.tpu). In addition it provides mouse support. It has some nice functions for font manipulations (write in an angle, etc.). Unfortunately some of the algorithms (like fill for example) are poorly optimized.
= Super Picture - a painting tool (a little bit more advanced than MS Paint)
= A bit map font editor

P.S. The author seems interested in feedback (esp. before deciding whether to make any updates).

Okay, it's not by the same author, but here's another guy with a lot of good Turbo Pascal programs: http://tothpaul.free.fr/sources.php?bp7

P.S. You're probably already aware of Dave Gillespie's p2c (srcs), but I also just found ptoc (which, funnily enough, prefers C++ but optionally uses C if it can). Nice to compare the speed of C compilers vs. VP21, TMT, FPC, GPC, TP55. ;-)

The Try/Raise/Finally exception handling looks interesting as this was done in 1998. And don't forget the unfinished Game Kit. ;-)

I was more impressed by his 3d engines and the MIDI player, but yeah, those were cool too.

P.S. Speaking of TP games, I assume you've seen this Mario clone (w/ srcs) by Wiering Software?

Yes, of course. There also was a nice strategic game from a Polish company written in TP, but I can't remember its name now.

("Polish" was wrong.)

That game was called "Colony Wars 2492" (a prequel to "Akte Europa"). It was written in TP6. IIRC I couldn't get past level 6. I think, I did, what had to be done, but it didn't warp to the next level.

Here's another Pascal (TP6) game w/ srcs called Stellar Conquest III.

I remember getting the registered version by changing a single byte. ;-)

That game actually looks a bit complex! (I think I tried it once or twice back in the day, and it was too much!) I have fonder memories of several of his other games, especially UFO ("wow, I'm doing pretty good!", "doh!", "woohoo!", etc.), which was always loads of fun.

In fact, I remember downloading UFO (on AOL trial) on my old 486 via 2400 bps. It took like 30 mins! I hoped it was actually good (and it was, thankfully). That was in 1994, and it was actually the first time I'd ever seen a DOS .BAT file. (Yes, I know, I'm so lame, blah blah blah.) :-P

Another DOS Turbo C(++) goodie - Sconic the Blue Blob

GameDev.net game overview.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Intel Pentium 200 MMX PC (or 100% compatible CPU)
32bit 2D Graphics PCB
32Mb RAM (64Mb recommended)
1Mb free Hard Drive

The earlier download link on the GameDev.NET is now out of date. To download Sconic with sources, you need to visit Sarah Cartwright's website then go to her portfolio page and scroll down to Example 5 : Sconic The Blue Blob.

Not TP, but I'll let it slide. ;-)

I would seriously doubt these are the true requirements. Maybe it needed a semi-fast computer, but I would be heavily surprised if it indeed used 32-bit gfx or MMX or even 32 MB RAM (in TC++?? using what, EMS???).

Neither download link worked for me yesterday. Of course, I don't really need it. (And I have Sonic Mega Collection for XBox 1 anyways.)

P.S. There was another (shareware) Sonic clone written in QuickBASIC many years ago, but I don't have any links on-hand, and I forget exactly what it was called (Spinball sounds familiar, but that's also the name of a different Sonic pinball game, so I dunno).

P.P.S. There was a Sonic-inspired Atari Lynx game called Zaku that came out like last year (!). Eventually they changed all the graphics to not be copyrighted (thankfully). But my (second-hand) Lynx II broke several years ago (made in 1991, broke in 2006, gee I wonder why ... OLD!), so it's moot to me unless I get another. (I did [insanely?] bid on another on eBay a month or so ago but lost, heh.)

EDIT: I think Spinball is it. But there's also a (better?) one I've never tried here (Sonic X-treme).

Your replies were not to C projects but I'll let that slide as I like TP;) heh

Your absolutely right. Although the published specs, they were I believe the intended specs for the final game rather than this version. I noticed this later (after my post) but included the specs from the documentation "as was".

I downloaded Sarah's game ages ago and was reminded of it by this discussion, but did test the links when I posted (honest!) certainly they were working ok then!!! I would suggest trying again tomorrow probably down for maintenance.

Interesting will check out your links. Annoying due to a temporary network blip my original longer reply with some links that I thought would have been of interest got lost in transit. Too tired now, so will just say nice to see someone else with an interest in preserving/collecting old systems. Note: I am interested in DOS for preservation reasons and also keeping it "current".
