You didn't reply what went wrong with FPC (e.g. was it runtime or while compiling?). As said I'm not aware of problems, but I do realize that if you have a dirty codebase is harder to port to 32-bit.

If Japeth doesn't find something ( I assume he will), then I would try to get it working (or parts working) with freepascal, and to compile as much as possible with -gtt, range checking etc; to validate as much as possible.

Just to see if you can dig up pointers to what could be wrong.
