Did you mean RAM-disc?
Also for CWSDPMI you can disable swap.
I also think that lowres textures looks better square blocked than blurry. I have tried e.g. 3Dfx patch for Blood but I cannot play it long as the blur iritated me a lot. Also 3Dfx voodoo 1 doesn't support better than 640x480, maybe 800x600 in some cases, which was fine on old 14" CRT but not so fine on large 21" LCD so I rather run software renderer in native resolution :)
