There's the SYSCFG msr, which may determine ( at least on AMD systems, haven't checked Intel as of yet ) how the cpu sees memory beyond 4 GB (bit 22 of SYSCFG).

I uploaded SetMtrr (my old VesaMtrr tool, now renamed) to github. It may give a hint.
