I'm far from an expert at memory internals, but DOS extenders are weird. Sometimes they get confused or have conflicts. Try again without UMBPCI. Or, if you're adventurous, you can get SS.EXE (from dos32a-912-bin.zip) and try changing the memory configuration of your dos32a.exe file (and/or gs386.exe). You could also try re-stubbing gs386.exe with something else (Causeway, D3X, WDOSX, ...). Or try loading "hdpmi32 -r" first. EDIT: In fact, FLWRITER.EXE and PDF2HTML.EXE are built with DJGPP, hence they prefer CWSDPMI, which is only a "pure DPMI" host, not extender like OpenWatcom typically wants. I've often seen conflicts between the two, so you may wish to load "hdpmi32 -r" first to be consistent or re-stub with D3X, as those (more or less) seem fairly sane.

P.S. Georg, it looks like you UPX'd gs386.exe but forgot to wstrip.exe it first. (Or whoever compiled gs386.exe, anyways.)
