There was a thread in freedos-user which showed that many DOS users are running DOS in a virtual machine of some kind. A floppy image can be used with that and is easier to download than the full FreeDOS CD.

And with the El-Torito standard you can also make bootable CDs from a floppy image.

Rugxulo wrote to me that his new PC does not have a floppy drive any more and it took him quite a lot of time to compile the floppy image in the first place.
On the other hand I removed quite a lot of the utilities from the bare-dos image again because I did not need it. I see it more as a base for an embedded DOS application. (Puppy DOS / Tiny Core DOS :-) )
