Except that GCC compiles itself and is still slow, esp. 4.x series. So clearly it's thrashing the cache, too many separate pieces, less than optimal algorithms, suffers from complex portability, etc. Indeed it should be easier to bootstrap, IMHO. And -O0 should ideally be twice as fast as it is now. Oh well.
