Thanks - that works.

Now I have

FAT16 RAMdrive I:\ in XMS o.7 GB
FAT16 RAMdrive J:\ in SXMS 4 GB
FAT32 RAMdrive G:\ in XMS o.7 GB
FAT32 RAMdrive H:\ in SXMS 24 GB

to experiment regarding timings of large files.

So it seems all of SXMS is allocated in my 32 GB system.

Just for fun I did c:\freedos\bin\SHSURDRV 1000M,K: and it appeared to give me ~ 1 GB drive. Also did c:\freedos\bin\SHSURDRV 100M,L: and it appeared to give me ~ 100 MB drive. But I thought ALL SXMS has been allocated to J:\ + H:\ drives above?

When previously, I determined by trial and error, that a maximum of 1400M is available for RAMdrives (in XMS), a value of 1500M created all sorts of problems - I cannot understand at the moment how it is even possible to have the later drives K:\ (1 GB) and L:\(100 MB).

Question - Is there a DOS utility that gives me a memory map of the SXMS - i.e. so I can tell what the addresses in RAM for all the RAMdrives are?
