Maybe so.

There is also the possibility that issues MAY be occurring due to the fact that I am booting off a (slow) USB stick in FREEDOS RC5. I am getting indications that FREEDOS can behave differently in certain situations.

It would be helpful if someone(s) can give precise pointers on how to have alternative (to FREEDOS). For instance, I tried to download just the files only for MSDOS 7.1 to do common things (getting confused which are internal/external commands) - but no luck with usable downloads.

What I am aiming for is for example:-

If (today only say) I was not happy with FREEDOS RC5 DIR command (when using FAT32 Ramdrives) then (for today only) I would use MSDOS71 DIR (internal) command instead. I don't know - maybe have 5x "different command.com" installed, if that makes any sense?

Question - how far can I go with "Mixing and matching" FREEDOS RC5 stuff with "anything else out there"? So on a case by case basis, I would choose which works best for me. And of course, where exactly to source the alternatives to FREEDOS (so many "dead" sites out there).

Question - can I use 4DOS stuff at all (on the same USB stick as FREEDOS)?

Question - other alternatives to FREEDOS and where to get?

My machine is a HP zBOOK 15 G2 i7 quad processor with 3200x1800 display and 32 GiByte RAM. The cpu model i7 4810MQ. It was manufactured in 2015, purchased second-hand (but was "mint" condition - as if it was never touched!) - it seems that only the original packaging and any manuals was missing. My model has been superseded by almost yearly model upgrades (up to G7 or G8 now). Windows 10 pro was already installed.
