I re-ran the tests using doslfn-c and doslfnms-c version (the 100 seconds timings you are referring to were using doslfn-b and doslfnms-b versions). The results using the "-c" version set are in the reply immediately before your post here.

I tried to automate the timings in a set of batch files (1.bat, 2.bat ...6.bat) where all batch files are similar (only differing by file location, eg USB stick (FAT16), or XMS FAT32 or SXMS FAT32 (and either ROOT directory or a 1st level sub-directory). The batch file 5.bat is representative of the six batch files and is included with the 100-second timings reply of mine. The exact same batch files and the folders tested for timings were used in both instances (of versions -b and -c doslfn/doslfnms).

Please feel free to critically analyze my batch files (e.g. 5.bat) - I tried to prevent any possible DIR table/list caching interfering with true timings. I wanted to avoid rebooting the computer for every timing aspect (in this case a total of 18 times - 6 each of non-doslfn(ms), doslfnms, and doslfn).

Note that with my latest posting (with -c versions of doslfn and doslfnms) the timings are "color-coded":-

WHITE for plain DIR (i.e no doslfn or doslfnms used) - and is just after the end part of the displayed DIR at the top of each screen capture

GREEN for doslfnms (version -c)

RED for doslfn (version -c = version 41f latest update)
