Well, based on Tom's important suggestion that start without CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT - in my case FDCONFIG.SYS/FDAUTO.BAT because I am using FreeDOS - I am building up, step by step, a workable minimal system.

To even just DEVLOAD HIMEMSX, in fact without the extension .exe I get an error message, I had to overcome the new error message

Error: free drive letter not found, increase LASTDRIVE

Apparently at the DOS PROMPT it seems, I cannot set up last drive - so I created a "new"

config.sys

!LASTDRIVE = Z
DEVLOAD himemSX.exe ' version 6,653 bytes 10 April

So I also created a "new" autoexec.bat (to save a lot of future typing) with code lines:-

RDRVSX32.exe 4 'latest version 4,016 bytes 12 April for 4 GB SXMS RAM Drive
SMARTDRV.exe A B C D E F G 32768 4096 512 '45,379 bytes 12 April (7 bytes)
doslfnMS.com ' -c variant 21,799 bytes 10 April

No matter which sequence doslfnMS/Smartdrv I have, and if doslfnMS before/after RDRVSX32 - I do not get LFN's with DIR

My smartdrv (32M) does "see" drives "A to G" and my USB stick has drives C,D and E.

Edit -Q for HIMEMSX.exe does not work
